The Vladimir Theotokos is a famous example of the Eleusa icon or the Virgin of Tenderness. It augments the earlier regal depictions of St Mary and the Christ-child such as the Sedes Sapientiæ. Here we are given a glimpse of the natural, human affection between mother and child. Allegorically, it speaks of God’s love for all of His creation.
