Come, let us make brick, and bake them with fire. And they had brick instead of stones, and slime instead of mortar. And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven: and let us make our name famous…

Having escaped the Flood, the sons men again lift themselves up in pride. Not content with the stones given in Creation, they set up great engines of industry, like Mordor, to make bricks and build a great city, a great tower into heavens, vainly trying to rival the Almighty.

Exinanite, exinanite usque ad fundamentum in ea.
O’erthrow it, they cried, o’erthrow it, till the very foundation is left bare.

For this the Lord confounds mens’s language and sends down His angels to destroy the work of this rebellious city, Babylon, literally confusion. For whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

The confusion, disparity and contention amongst the nations then awaits the coming of Christ and Pentecost for a single Head and a single tongue to return all men to one family.
