St Christopher
St Christopher
To him that overcometh, I will give…him a white counter, and in the counter, a new name written, which no man knoweth.
Reprobus, Reprobate, was a mercenary, ever shifting loyalty to the more powerful leader. Finally seeing that even Satan was afraid of the Holy Cross, he abandoned his life to seek this powerful Christ. A chance meeting with an old hermit brought about his catechism and baptism and his heart turned from proud deeds of strength to humility and meekness. Unable to match the hermit’s asceticism, he was finally given the task of using his great stature to help travelers pass a dangerous river.
One night while ferrying a small child across the divide, a great tempest arose and it seemed that the world weighed him down. The child replied, Right thou art. Thou bearest not only the world, but the Creator of heaven and earth. I am Jesus Christ, thy King and Lord, and henceforth thou shalt be called Christophorus, that is, Christ-bearer.
Thenceforth, St Christopher became a preacher of Christ until his martyrdom at the hands of Emperor Decius.
